Trump Advocates for Palestinian Technocratic Committee to Oversee Gaza

Post by : Meena Hassan

U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced his support for a newly established Palestinian technocratic group expected to take charge of Gaza during a transitional phase. This body, named the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, is intended to oversee civil matters and stabilize the region after a lengthy and devastating conflict.

According to Trump, the committee will function under the auspices of an international entity dubbed the “Board of Peace,” which he will preside over. The board will supervise Gaza’s governance during this transition, with details on its full membership set to be revealed shortly.

This proposed committee will consist of 15 members and be headed by Ali Shaath, a former deputy minister focused on economic and industrial initiatives. The technocratic leadership aims to restore essential services, facilitate reconstruction, and maintain order without direct political engagement.

The initiative received approval from both Israel and Hamas in October as part of a broader ceasefire agreement. However, the ceasefire remains tenuous, with reports of ongoing violence from both sides since its initiation. Principal issues include unresolved hostage situations, delays in re-establishing border crossings, and Hamas's insistence on maintaining its military capabilities.

International mediators will now grapple with significant challenges, such as negotiating the disarmament of Hamas, organizing additional Israeli withdrawals, and deploying peacekeeping forces to bolster stability in the region.

Trump has emphasized that regional allies are expected to converge on a comprehensive disarmament agreement, which he indicates is vital for achieving lasting peace. While proponents view the technocratic government as a pragmatic approach toward stability, detractors argue that international oversight could undermine genuine self-governance.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, marked by extensive destruction, displacement, and scarcity of resources after months of conflict. As the technocratic body gets ready to emerge, uncertainty lingers regarding whether this transitional structure can foster genuine peace and pave the way for a sustainable political solution.
