Trump Invites India to Join New Peace Initiative for Gaza

Post by : Meena Hassan

US President Donald Trump has formally invited India to join his ambitious "Board of Peace", designed to tackle the Gaza conflict and promote enduring global peace. The invitation, directed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was made public by the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, highlighting the significance Washington attributes to India's involvement.

In his correspondence, Trump characterized this initiative as a "historically significant and remarkable endeavor" to ensure stability in the Middle East and to introduce a "new bold strategy" for resolving global disputes. He underscored that the initiative is rooted in the recent United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803, which supports the peace vision for Gaza.

The Modi administration has not yet issued an official response, but this invitation arrives amid existing tensions in India-US relations, particularly related to stalled trade negotiations and elevated tariffs on Indian goods.

Ambassador Gor expressed his pride in conveying the invitation via social media, describing the Board as a means to "bring lasting peace to Gaza" while fostering "effective governance for stability and prosperity."

The "Board of Peace" is part of the subsequent phase of a ceasefire agreement finalized in October 2025 between Israel and Hamas, endorsed by the UN Security Council in November 2025 to monitor the ceasefire. This initiative aspires to evolve into a new international organization, initially focused on reconstruction and peace in Gaza, but with plans to expand to other global conflicts.

President Trump intends to lead the board indefinitely and has extended invitations to about 60 countries, including Pakistan, which has shown a desire to engage in peace efforts for Gaza. Countries are offered three-year terms, while permanent membership is available for those contributing $1 billion to support the board’s operations. The US government emphasizes that funds raised will mainly aid Gaza’s reconstruction, minimizing administrative overhead.

Notable appointees to the executive board include prominent figures like US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and World Bank President Ajay Banga.

Nonetheless, the initiative has sparked international debate. Some European governments and diplomats have raised concerns that broadening the board's role could weaken the authority of the United Nations. Critics argue this approach risks creating an alternative to the UN, dubbed "Trump's United Nations," circumventing existing charter and processes.

A senior UN official, without directly commenting on the board, reiterated the UN’s distinct moral and legal authority to unite nations. Annalena Baerbock, President of the UN General Assembly, emphasized the organization's role in averting regressions in peace efforts while noting that each country must evaluate its own participation.

China, Russia, and other nations holding veto power in the UN Security Council are anticipated to resist any initiatives challenging the established global order, while smaller countries may oppose any changes that could undermine their influence.

As President Trump advances this unprecedented peace body, the world watches closely to gauge how India and other nations will respond to this call for leadership in securing a peaceful future for Gaza and beyond.
