Dr. Kunal Sood emphasizes that while warm water is not a medication or a laxative, it supports the body's natural digestive functions. He explains that the science behind this claim lies in the activation of the gastrocolic reflex—an innate signal prompting the intestines to advance waste. This reflex often explains why some individuals feel the need to use the restroom after eating.
Drinking warm water can also relax intestinal muscles. When these muscles are relaxed, stool can navigate through the digestive tract more smoothly, alleviating discomfort during bowel movements. The doctor further notes that people tend to sip warm water at a slower pace, enhancing overall hydration. Adequate hydration is crucial for both preventing and easing constipation.
Research indicates that water temperature can affect gut function. Warm or body-temperature water aids smooth digestion, while colder options might hinder stomach activity. Thus, warm water could assist in restoring normal intestinal movement, especially in those with irregular bowel tendencies.
