Turkmenistan Advances Biotechnology Initiatives

Post by : Shakul

In Ashgabat, Turkmenistan is intensifying its commitment to biotechnology as experts convened to examine how cutting-edge scientific advancements could foster economic progress. The event, titled “The Economic Significance of the Integrated Development of Biotechnology in Turkmenistan,” took place at the International Scientific and Technological Park of the Academy of Sciences.

The conference featured prominent scientists, researchers, postgraduate students, and biotechnology professionals from all over the nation. Discussions highlighted the increasing importance of biotechnology in various sectors, including agriculture, medicine, industrial production, and environmental sustainability, as Turkmenistan moves toward modernizing its scientific and economic frameworks.

A key focus of the conference was the collaboration between Turkmenistan and China, highlighted by a Memorandum of Understanding between the AST Technopark and the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chinese researchers Yinwen Bin and Gang Liu presented their work on novel biological products derived from salt-tolerant micromycetes to aid crops in overcoming drought and high soil salinity.

The project employs synthetic biology and gene-editing techniques to produce cost-effective biopreparations that enhance stress resistance. These innovations aim to mitigate environmental issues such as desertification, climate change, and soil degradation while bolstering agricultural output in arid regions.

Additionally, AST Technopark scientists showcased existing biotechnology initiatives in Turkmenistan. In environmental projects, one notable approach uses local cyanobacteria to stabilize moving sands in the Garagum Desert, aiding in erosion control and enhancing soil quality, which promotes vegetation in desert terrains.

In agriculture, advancements include biological products derived from halotolerant micromycetes that enhance crop germination and resilience in saline environments. The conference also presented innovative industrial projects utilizing bioremediation techniques for cleaning oil-soaked lands through specialized microorganisms.

Moreover, the livestock and poultry industries have reaped benefits from biotechnology. Researchers designed balanced feed formulas for Akhal-Teke horses and explored alternative protein sourcing through insect farming for poultry. Such advancements are anticipated to lower import reliance and boost local production capabilities.

Innovations also included methods for evaluating the shiny coat of Akhal-Teke horses using biochemical analysis, alongside pharmaceutical and marine biotechnology projects focusing on herbal medicine, essential oils, antioxidants, and biofertilizers derived from native plants and Caspian algae.

Officials remarked that the conference underscored biotechnology's vital role as a catalyst for Turkmenistan's economic development. Authorities are optimistic that scientific advancements and modern biotechnological practices will further empower agriculture, environmental initiatives, healthcare, and industrial sectors as part of the country’s comprehensive development strategy for 2024-2028.
