UAE Completes Investigation into Arms Smuggling Operation to Sudan

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

An official from the State Security Prosecution confirmed that investigations into a major security case have now been completed. The case involved an attempt to transfer military equipment to the Port Sudan Authority using UAE territory. All accused individuals will soon be referred to trial. This step highlights the UAE’s commitment to transparency, justice, and strict enforcement of the law.

The case first came to light when UAE authorities uncovered a plan to illegally smuggle weapons and military equipment. The operation involved an organized cell engaged in arms trafficking and money laundering. The suspects were performing covert brokerage operations, secret mediation, and undisclosed commission deals, aiming to move military-grade items to Port Sudan. Arrests were made after authorities intercepted the group during their illegal operations.

During inspection of a private aircraft, authorities seized a large quantity of Goryunov-type ammunition measuring 54.7 x 62mm. This ammunition is military grade and cannot be transported without legal approval. Officials also recovered part of the financial proceeds from the deal, held by two members of the group. The presence of the hidden funds and the intended illegal transfer raised immediate concerns, leading to swift action.

The operation was conducted under full legal supervision. Public Prosecution oversaw every step, and arrests followed judicial warrants issued by the Attorney-General. The warrants allowed the search of the aircraft and other relevant locations, ensuring that the investigation adhered strictly to UAE legal procedures and maintained its integrity.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had links with Sudanese military authorities. Evidence showed dealings with Sudanese officers, politicians, businessmen, and companies appearing on US sanctions lists. Some individuals were also listed by Interpol, highlighting the broader network and its connection to Sudan’s military procurement activities.

Further inquiry revealed that transactions were carried out at the request of Sudan’s Armed Forces Armament Committee. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan chairs the committee, with Yasser Al-Atta as deputy. Coordination was reportedly handled by Othman Al-Zubair, the financial official of the Port Sudan Authority. Public Prosecution stated that additional names linked to the case will be revealed as proceedings continue.

Authorities uncovered the sources of funding behind the military equipment deals. Audio and video recordings, communications between cell members, and documents such as contracts and financial records provided clear evidence of how funds were transferred and the intended smuggling process.

Reports confirmed that part of the funding passed through a bank operating in the UAE. This discovery is under detailed review to ensure accountability for all individuals and institutions involved. It also highlights the need for strict monitoring to prevent misuse of financial systems for illegal activities.

With the investigation completed, all accused individuals will be referred to trial. The UAE continues to emphasize its dedication to national security, preventing criminal activity, and upholding international laws. The case demonstrates the country’s ability to detect, halt, and investigate complex networks involved in illegal arms smuggling and financial crimes.
