UAE and India Enhance Economic Cooperation with CEPA Review

UAE and India Enhance Economic Cooperation with CEPA Review

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The UAE and India have marked a pivotal advancement in their collaboration by re-evaluating the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), targeting a robust trade goal of $100 billion.

This review convened in Abu Dhabi during the 16th meeting of the UAE–India Joint Committee and the fifth Strategic Dialogue session. High-ranking officials from both nations participated, underscoring the significance they place on fostering economic, financial, and cultural cooperation.

Key discussions underscored the ongoing growth of bilateral trade since the implementation of CEPA, emphasizing the need for enhanced accessibility and efficiency in cross-border transactions. A notable achievement was the digitization of financial transactions, notably through the integration of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the UAE’s AANI, which aims to facilitate everyday payment processes. Additionally, the compatibility of India’s RuPay cards with the UAE’s JAYWAN system is poised to benefit various stakeholders, including businesses and travelers, by lowering transaction costs.

Education was also highlighted as a significant aspect of the evolving partnership. The formation of the Gandhi–Zayed Centre for Peace, Tolerance, and Sustainability Studies was acknowledged as a critical initiative to enhance academic collaboration and cultural exchange. Progress made at IIT Delhi’s Abu Dhabi campus showcased a commitment to educational ventures, reflecting burgeoning interest in cooperative educational programs.

In summary, the meeting illustrated that the relationship extends beyond trade to encompass finance, education, and technology, fostering a deeper understanding between peoples. Continuous interactions via structured platforms like the Strategic Dialogue and Joint Committee reaffirm the UAE–India collaboration as a leading example of a dynamic and future-oriented bilateral relationship in the region.
