Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, UAE Minister of Justice, met Carlo Nordio, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Italy, in Rome to discuss ways to enhance judicial collaboration. The meeting focused on strengthening legal frameworks, promoting mutual assistance in judicial matters, and supporting both nations’ efforts to combat cross-border organised crime and financial misconduct.
Both ministers affirmed their shared commitment to advancing bilateral relations in legal and judicial fields. They emphasised the value of continuous dialogue and institutional cooperation in achieving justice and stability. The meeting reflected the UAE’s vision of developing global partnerships that support legal transparency, fairness, and respect for international law.
A major topic of discussion was combating transnational organised crime, which poses challenges to both nations and the wider global community. The ministers agreed that effective international cooperation is vital in preventing crimes that cross borders, including human trafficking, money laundering, and cybercrime.
They acknowledged that modern criminal networks increasingly use complex financial systems and digital platforms to hide illegal proceeds, making collaboration essential for success in fighting such threats.
The UAE and Italy reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen extradition agreements and mutual legal assistance mechanisms. These arrangements allow both countries to efficiently exchange information, share evidence, and ensure justice is served across jurisdictions. Such cooperation reflects the two countries’ shared belief that justice must be global in reach and consistent in practice.
Both sides also discussed the importance of streamlining judicial processes and building more effective communication between their respective ministries to improve case handling and legal coordination.
The ministers placed special emphasis on addressing financial crimes and the misuse of virtual assets, including cryptocurrency-related activities. They agreed to enhance efforts in tracing, freezing, and confiscating criminal proceeds, which play a key role in dismantling global criminal operations.
They also discussed developing joint training programmes and technical exchanges between financial crime units in both countries to strengthen capabilities in financial investigations and digital forensics.
Both parties highlighted the significance of asset recovery in global justice. They agreed to share best practices and technical expertise to ensure the efficient identification and recovery of assets obtained through illegal activities.
The UAE and Italy will work closely to develop stronger policies for regulating virtual assets, ensuring compliance with international standards, and preventing their misuse for unlawful purposes.
The meeting underscored the importance of institutional coordination and the exchange of expertise between relevant authorities in both nations. The ministers agreed to hold regular meetings to review progress, explore new areas of collaboration, and ensure effective implementation of agreed measures.
Such structured cooperation will help strengthen institutional ties and promote mutual understanding in handling complex judicial cases.
Beyond judicial matters, both sides expressed mutual interest in enhancing cultural and academic cooperation. They agreed that developing educational and cultural partnerships would deepen understanding between the UAE and Italy, fostering trust and long-term collaboration.
The ministers recognised that exchanges in law education, legal research, and cultural dialogue contribute significantly to building stronger people-to-people connections and enriching judicial knowledge.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the UAE and Italy’s shared vision for a just, secure, and transparent international legal system. Both ministers emphasised that ongoing collaboration will not only support justice efforts but also help both countries address emerging global challenges together.
Their dialogue in Rome reflects the continued friendship and strategic cooperation between the UAE and Italy, as both nations work to promote peace, uphold justice, and ensure prosperity for their citizens and partners around the world.
