Impact of Father's Health on Pregnancy and Child's Future: Insights from a UK Doctor

Impact of Father's Health on Pregnancy and Child's Future: Insights from a UK Doctor

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A surgeon from the UK, Dr Karan Rajan, is shedding light on an often-neglected subject—how the health of a father affects both pregnancy and the child's long-term wellbeing. His core message emphasizes that the responsibility of preparing for pregnancy is not solely on women; fathers play a vital role, and their lifestyle choices significantly impact the course of a pregnancy and the health of their baby.

In a video shared on Instagram on November 29, Dr Rajan candidly discussed the personal changes he made in his life while getting ready to conceive. He mentioned that sperm development takes roughly 74 days, suggesting that men should begin focusing on their health at least three months before planning for a family. This timeframe is crucial as choices made during this period influence sperm quality.

The surgeon elaborated that pregnancy symptoms and complications are related not just to maternal health but also to the quality of the father's sperm. Poor sperm health is linked to an increased likelihood of pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia—serious conditions that can jeopardize both mother and baby, underlining the importance of a father's health right from conception.

Moreover, Dr Rajan pointed out that sperm are not just carriers of genetic information; they also contain epigenetic indicators—tiny chemical markers that are shaped by a man's lifestyle. Factors like diet, physical activity, stress, and harmful habits significantly influence these markers. Research suggests that men who smoke, have poor diets, or are sedentary may increase their children's risks for obesity, diabetes, and heart issues.

To guide prospective fathers in making healthier choices, Dr Rajan proposed a practical “preconception playbook.” He urged men to quit smoking and limit or avoid alcohol intake, as alcohol can impair sperm shape and quantity. He also touched on the importance of vital nutrients. Folate, often highlighted for women, is equally essential for men; low folate levels can adversely affect sperm health. Additionally, vitamin D is crucial for healthy sperm and the initial development of the placenta, while zinc enhances sperm mobility, and omega-3 fatty acids boost overall sperm quality.

Men are also encouraged to prioritize proper sleep, as inadequate rest can lower sperm count and quality. Regular physical activity, even a brief walk, helps regulate hormones and maintain overall health. Stress reduction is another critical aspect; Dr Rajan noted that stress can harm sperm health, so adopting stress-relief techniques like meditation, breathing exercises, or even venting into a pillow can be beneficial.

Through his message, Dr Rajan advocates for viewing pregnancy preparation as a collective duty. A healthy father can contribute to a more favorable pregnancy experience and brighter future for the child. His insights remind us that both parents play an essential role in shaping a child's health even before birth.
