Heart Specialist Discusses Risks of Leg Swelling

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Leg swelling is a frequent issue for many, often arising after prolonged periods of standing or sitting. Generally, this issue is benign and will resolve independently. However, there are instances when swelling could signal a more serious health complication. Dr. Jeremy London, a heart specialist with over 25 years of experience, elucidates how to differentiate between harmless swelling and serious conditions.

Dr. London refers to swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet as edema, which occurs when excess fluid escapes blood vessels and accumulates in tissues. This can result in puffy legs, a heavy sensation, and may hinder mobility. While some triggers are straightforward, others require professional evaluation.

He articulated that improper function of the leg veins can lead to blood pooling in the lower legs instead of returning to the heart, a scenario termed chronic venous insufficiency, which may foster long-lasting swelling and discomfort.

Further, organs such as the heart, kidneys, or liver that struggle with fluid regulation can contribute to swelling. When these organs fail to manage fluids effectively, the resulting buildup can settle in the lower body, serving as a warning sign of underlying issues that should not be overlooked.

Certain medications, including those for hypertension, pain management, or hormonal treatments, can likewise induce swelling. Dr. London emphasized the importance of notifying a physician if swelling arises following the introduction of a new drug.

An additional cause to consider is a malfunction in the lymphatic system, which acts as the body’s drainage network. Blockages or overloading in this system can yield lymphedema, a condition that often necessitates ongoing management.

To mitigate swelling, Dr. London suggested simple lifestyle changes. Regular movement, such as walking, encourages leg muscles to propel blood back to the heart. Elevating the legs above heart level can also alleviate swelling, as can the use of compression stockings, which assist in expelling excess fluid from the tissues.

He cautioned that sudden leg swelling, unilateral swelling, or swelling accompanied by pain, chest discomfort, or breathing difficulties may indicate a blood clot, necessitating immediate medical intervention. He advised not to delay seeking help upon noticing these symptoms.

While most instances of swelling are benign, Dr. London encourages attentiveness to one’s body. Prompt action can avert severe complications. Simple measures such as increased mobility, leg elevation, and monitoring for unusual symptoms are crucial for maintaining health.

This guidance aims to enhance understanding of individual symptoms, though it should not replace professional medical advice. Anyone with concerns should consult a healthcare provider.
