Deepti Sharma Released by UP Warriorz Ahead of WPL Auction

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a surprising announcement, the UP Warriorz have decided to release star all-rounder Deepti Sharma ahead of the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. This decision has left both fans and analysts astonished, particularly following Deepti's impressive showing in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, where she excelled and was recognized as the Player of the Series.

Exceptional World Cup Performance

Deepti's role in leading India to World Cup glory was pivotal. The 28-year-old showcased her prowess as the tournament's leading wicket-taker, fusing effective spin bowling with essential middle-order batting. Her remarkable performance peaked during the final match against South Africa, where she captured 5 wickets for 39 runs and contributed 58 runs with the bat, propelling India to a historic victory.

Her consistent performance throughout the tournament solidified her rank among the premier cricketers in women’s cricket.

UP Warriorz’s Unexpected Choice

Despite Shimra's standout achievements, the management of UP Warriorz announced her release in favor of a future-focused strategy. This stunning decision prompted widespread discussion within the cricket community when the franchise disclosed its retention and release list.

Head coach Abhishek Nayar discussed the motives behind this strategic shift, asserting the importance of a clean start. “Retention choices are never easy, especially with so many talented individuals. Our goal is to build a solid foundation and have the available budget to pursue key players who can help us clinch the Championship, potentially including bringing back some familiar faces in the auction,” Nayar explained.

A Shift in Strategy

Deepti has previously excelled in the WPL, having been named Player of the Tournament in the 2024 season, where she led the UP Warriorz through critical matches. Her calm demeanor and leadership skills made her a top asset within the league.

In a strategic overhaul, the franchise has now chosen to keep Shweta Sehrawat, a former Under-19 World Cup winner, indicating a shift towards nurturing a younger team and focusing on long-term growth.

According to Nayar, deciding to release such a valued player was challenging. “These decisions are never straightforward. We trust in our strategy, and our objective is to form the best possible team with a full financial purse,” he acknowledged.

With Deepti's release, she is expected to be one of the key players to watch during the upcoming WPL 2025 auction, with many teams vying for her capabilities.

Experts believe her all-rounder talents and recent accolades make her a coveted player, indicating that her next destination, whether with UP Warriorz or another team, will significantly enhance whichever squad she joins.

This scenario illustrates the critical link between strategic financial planning and team dynamics shaping the women's franchise landscape today. The choice to let go of top players like Deepti Sharma underscores the evolving nature of the business in cricket.

The forthcoming weeks are set to be crucial for Deepti. Her extraordinary skills and leadership ensure her status as one of India's cricketing luminaries, with much more on the horizon.
