U.S. Freezes Afghan Visa Processes Following White House Shooting

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A tragic shooting incident near the White House resulted in the death of one National Guard member and left another critically injured, prompting an immediate suspension of Afghan visa applications and asylum evaluations.

The alleged shooter, 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who had previously served in the CIA-backed Afghan Army and was granted asylum this year, is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill.

Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, tragically lost her life in the incident, while Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, is currently hospitalized in critical condition. Both members were part of the West Virginia National Guard stationed in the area.

In light of these events, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced the temporary halt of all asylum decisions, emphasizing the need for thorough vetting of every applicant. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the moratorium on visas for all Afghan passport holders.

Neighbors described Lakanwal as a quiet and polite individual but noted his challenges in securing employment. He had briefly worked for Amazon Flex over the summer. Lakanwal entered the U.S. in 2021 through the Afghan resettlement initiative under the Biden administration and later secured asylum under the Trump administration.

Beckstrom, who joined the military in 2023 immediately after high school, was commended for her commitment and leadership. Her unit honored her as a dedicated military police officer who volunteered for deployment in D.C.

This incident has reignited discussions surrounding immigration policy, vetting protocols, and the safety of military personnel stationed domestically, while investigations into Lakanwal's motives are ongoing.
