US to Impose Sanctions on Maduro and Cartel de Los Soles, Alerts UN

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The United States has alerted the United Nations about its intention to implement sanctions designed to sever resources that support Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the drug cartel known as Cartel de Los Soles. This announcement unfolds against the backdrop of escalating tensions in Latin America, with Russia and China cautioning that these U.S. measures could set a perilous example.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, described transnational criminal and terrorist organizations as the “gravest threat” to the Western Hemisphere. He emphasized that Maduro’s regime is heavily reliant on oil shipments that also fuel the cartel’s drug operations. The U.S. has augmented its military footprint in the Caribbean and Latin America, including the blockade of vessels subject to sanctions.

Recently, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully intercepted two oil tankers laden with Venezuelan crude while monitoring a third vessel approaching Venezuela’s territorial waters. This strategy aims to disrupt both Maduro and the cartel, which the U.S. has categorized as a foreign terrorist organization in light of its involvement in drug trafficking.

In response, Venezuela has vehemently dismissed the U.S. claims, labeling the cartel as “non-existent” and asserting that the true menace lies with the U.S. government. With backing from Russia and China, Venezuela sought a Security Council meeting to address the intensifying tensions.

Russia cautioned that U.S. measures might serve as a “blueprint for future aggressive actions against Latin American nations.” Similarly, China urged the U.S. to halt its measures immediately to prevent further aggravation. Venezuela’s UN envoy, Samuel Moncada, remarked that it is “ridiculous” for the U.S. to justify these actions under war protocols since there is no conflict in the Caribbean.

This scenario underscores the fragile equilibrium between implementing security protocols and fostering international diplomacy. While the U.S. regards sanctions and military initiatives as vital to combat drug trafficking and curtail Maduro’s influence, Venezuela, along with Russia and China, views these actions as confrontational and menacing.

The ongoing stalemate at the UN highlights the complexities in tackling transnational crime and political upheaval in Latin America. The forthcoming weeks will be pivotal in determining how the U.S., Venezuela, and other global stakeholders navigate this pressing issue.
