Vietnam Updates Vision for Land Use Planning

Post by : Shakul

The Vietnamese government is advancing a significant update to its National Land Use Planning strategy, covering the period from 2021 to 2030, with ambitions extending to 2050. This initiative is designed to harmonize economic expansion with environmental safeguards, food security, and sustainable urban development.

In a high-level meeting held in Hanoi, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung led a review of the proposed amendments and discussed how to implement effective land management policies. Senior representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, alongside officials from various government sectors, participated in these discussions.

Officials noted that Vietnam's developmental focus has evolved considerably over the last five years, particularly with an increasing emphasis on industrial zones, urban infrastructure, and economic growth. Consequently, the nation now needs a more adaptable and forward-thinking land use framework.

During the meeting, various critical land categories were evaluated, including rice cultivation zones, protected and special-use forests, and land earmarked for national defense and security. The authorities emphasized that planning modifications should minimize land waste and avoid protracted delays in development efforts.

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung highlighted the necessity for future land planning to cater to both urgent economic demands and long-term national priorities. He cautioned against fragmented approaches to development and stressed that land management must align with broader national, regional, and sectoral strategies.

Officials also underscored the need to ensure food security, particularly by safeguarding rice-growing areas in the Mekong Delta. At the same time, discussions encompassed creating more opportunities for industrial advancement, transport infrastructure, urban growth, and public services in regions with lower agricultural productivity.

The revised planning framework will take into account factors such as climate change, urbanization, global market dynamics, advancements in farming technology, and environmental challenges. Authorities believe these elements are vital for establishing a sustainable and resilient land management system for the future.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam has affirmed its commitment to refining the updated planning proposal, ensuring it aligns with the country's long-term economic aspirations while safeguarding environmental integrity and national security.
