AIIMS Doctor Issues Warning on Cotton Buds in Ear Cleaning

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

While cotton buds are a popular tool for ear cleaning, medical professionals caution that this practice could be harmful. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist with training from AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, has highlighted the risks associated with inserting cotton buds into the ear canal. His recent post emphasizes the dangers of this common habit.

Dr. Sethi reassures that our ears have a self-cleaning mechanism. This natural process means that cotton buds and other tools are unnecessary for wax removal. Though earwax might appear unattractive, it serves a critical function by shielding the ear canal from dust, dirt, and bacteria. Over time, earwax naturally exits the ear, but using cotton buds tends to push it further in, potentially causing blockages, discomfort, or infections.

Furthermore, Dr. Sethi points out that cotton bud usage can result in physical damage to the ear. Scratches within the ear canal can lead to pain, and in severe cases, the eardrum may sustain injuries. Such damage can cause symptoms like ringing in the ears, sharp pain, or even temporary hearing loss. He advises against compromising long-term health for a fleeting sensation of cleanliness.

In support of his advice, Dr. Sethi references a 2017 study indicating that over 70 percent of ear injuries seen in emergency rooms were linked to cotton bud use. This statistic underscores that many people mistakenly believe they’re using these tools safely.

He recommends that individuals refrain from using cotton buds for ear cleaning. For those who feel excessive wax buildup, consulting a medical professional is advisable. Doctors can safely remove wax using specialized equipment. He also reminded readers that cotton bud packaging typically states not to insert them into the ear canal, a warning that is often disregarded.

This crucial message emphasizes that maintaining ear hygiene does not require cotton buds or special cleaning products. The ear's innate capabilities should be trusted over risky practices that could lead to injury or long-term hearing challenges.
