Wellness Coach Reveals 6 Signs of Elevated Cortisol and Her Weight Loss Success

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Cortisol, commonly recognized as the stress hormone, significantly influences how our bodies deal with stress, manage metabolism, combat inflammation, and bolster immune function. However, prolonged elevated levels of this hormone can lead to detrimental effects. Wellness coach Rachel Sanders experienced this firsthand, grappling with high cortisol for years without recognizing the symptoms. Eventually, she realized that her everyday challenges stemmed from this hormonal imbalance.

After shedding 24 kilograms and enhancing her sleep and energy, Rachel took to social media to share her journey. She initially believed her fatigue and mood fluctuations were simply part of motherhood or a sign of poor time management. It wasn't until she discovered her high cortisol levels that she understood how much it was impacting her health. Her experience exemplifies the effects of chronic stress on the body and how adopting simple lifestyle changes can restore balance.

She highlighted six warning signs that prompted her to seek answers. The first indication was a lack of morning appetite. Typically, cortisol peaks shortly after waking, aiding alertness and readiness for breakfast. In Rachel's case, stress disrupted this natural signal. She recommended exposing oneself to morning sunlight, maintaining regular meals, and opting for protein-rich breakfasts.

The second sign was persistent abdominal fat. According to Rachel, heightened cortisol levels hinder weight loss, particularly in the midsection. Despite healthy eating, her belly fat remained unchanged. She addressed this by incorporating strength training three times a week, daily walks, sufficient protein intake, and natural adaptogens to harmonize her hormones.

A noticeable sign was facial puffiness and inflammation. High cortisol can negatively impact the lymphatic system, leading to water retention and discomfort. To counter this, Rachel focused on quality sleep and reduced her consumption of alcohol and processed foods. Transitioning to an anti-inflammatory diet helped her feel lighter.

An unmistakable sign was waking up at 3 a.m. regularly. Rachel discovered that drops in blood sugar or spikes in stress could disrupt deep sleep. To remedy this, she incorporated a bedtime snack of both protein and carbohydrates, which helped stabilize her blood sugar and facilitated better rest. Additionally, she implemented daily stress-relief techniques to minimize nighttime awakenings.

Frequent cravings also indicated something was amiss. Elevated cortisol levels trigger the body’s desire for quick energy and mineral replenishment, resulting in cravings for sugary or salty snacks. To combat this, Rachel focused on foods rich in magnesium, potassium, and electrolytes to support her adrenal glands in managing stress.

The sixth symptom was heightened emotional sensitivity. Rachel noted she became more irritable and overwhelmed, as high cortisol keeps the body in a persistent state of fight-or-flight. To soothe her mind, she engaged in practices like outdoor walks, deep breathing, and daily relaxation exercises, helping her nervous system regain stability.

Rachel’s journey serves as a reminder to heed our body's signals, which can often be overlooked amidst busy lives. She emphasized that high cortisol isn’t solely stress-related; it impacts sleep, weight, appetite, mood, and overall health. Her progress came through consistent, manageable changes: improved nutrition, regular exercise, good sleep, and relaxation time.

She encourages people to pay attention to their bodies and take proactive measures rather than waiting for symptoms to escalate. While her advice stems from personal experience, she highlights the importance of consulting medical professionals for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Cultivating healthy habits can significantly influence well-being, but professional support is crucial.

Her journey illustrates that healing begins with understanding our bodily signals and granting ourselves the care we deserve.
