West Sumatra Limits Retail Chain Expansion to Support Local Economy

West Sumatra Limits Retail Chain Expansion to Support Local Economy

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a bid to bolster local businesses, authorities in West Sumatra have enacted limitations on the growth of prominent retail chains such as Alfamart and Indomaret. This initiative aims to strengthen the regional economy while ensuring the survival of small enterprises.

According to officials, this approach is not a formal law but a mutual understanding intended to shield micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs). By promoting local businesses, the policy seeks to enhance economic activity at the community level.

In Padang, the local government has halted the issuance of licenses for new outlets belonging to large external retailers. This is a component of a broader strategy designed to create opportunities for local businesses to thrive and effectively compete.

Additionally, local retailers will need to allocate designated areas, referred to as “SME corners,” for promoting locally produced items. Small business proprietors are also encouraged to elevate product quality, improve packaging, and meet standards such as halal certification and food safety regulations.

Officials are optimistic that these steps will enhance the local supply chain and elevate the profile of regional products, contributing to the sustainable economic growth of West Sumatra.
