WICKED’ Musical to Shine in Riyadh This December

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

This December, Saudi Arabia will welcome one of the world’s most famous musicals — WICKED. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City, together with Broadway Entertainment Group, has announced that the show will run from December 3 to December 20 at the King Fahad Cultural Center. After the Riyadh performances, the production will also begin a Gulf tour, making it a historic cultural event for the region.

A Global Success Story

WICKED is considered one of the most popular musicals ever staged. Since its debut, it has been seen by more than 65 million people in 130 cities across 25 countries. The Riyadh production promises the same magic and spectacle, with over 100 performers, crew members, and musicians bringing the show to life. The performance will include more than 350 costumes and the unforgettable songs Defying Gravity, Popular, and For Good.

The Story of Friendship and Rivalry

The musical is inspired by the beloved tale The Wizard of Oz. However, instead of retelling Dorothy’s journey, it focuses on two young women in the land of Oz. One of them is born with green skin and is highly talented but often misunderstood. The other is admired, beautiful, and ambitious. Their unlikely friendship slowly turns into a rivalry that shapes their destinies. The story explains how they eventually become Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The message of WICKED goes beyond magic and fantasy. It speaks about friendship, love, courage, and the importance of being true to oneself. It also shows the struggles of standing up for what you believe in, even when the world misunderstands you.

A Composer’s Vision

Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist of WICKED, shared that this new production carries a fresh spirit while holding on to the timeless themes of the story. “This new production brings its own vitality and creativity, while continuing to tell our story of friendship, love, and having the courage to be true to yourself and stand up for what you believe in,” he said. His words highlight the lasting power of the musical’s message, which connects with audiences of all ages.

From Stage to Screen

The musical’s impact is not limited to the stage. In 2024, WICKED was adapted into a major Hollywood film directed by Jon M. Chu. The movie starred Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the lead roles. The film version went on to win two Academy Awards, proving the story’s global popularity and cultural importance.

A Cultural Milestone for Saudi Arabia

Bringing WICKED to Riyadh is part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing cultural transformation. In recent years, the Kingdom has opened its doors to international concerts, plays, exhibitions, and sporting events. Hosting such a globally recognized musical demonstrates the country’s growing role as a center for arts and entertainment in the Middle East.

The arrival of WICKED will also give Saudi audiences a chance to experience Broadway-level production at home. It is expected to attract not only residents of Riyadh but also visitors from across the region who want to see the world-famous show.

Why It Matters

The staging of WICKED in Riyadh represents more than entertainment. It shows how art and culture can bring people together across borders. Musicals like WICKED deliver universal messages that connect with audiences no matter their background. Themes such as friendship, ambition, and courage are understood by everyone, and this helps foster cultural exchange.

For Saudi Arabia, events like this also highlight the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals, which include diversifying the economy and building a strong entertainment sector. By hosting major international productions, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a hub for cultural and creative experiences.
