World Diabetes Day 2025: Understanding the Wider Impact of Diabetes on Health

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

On World Diabetes Day 2025, health professionals in New Delhi conveyed a critical message: diabetes extends far beyond elevated blood sugar levels. It can impact various body systems, adversely affecting hormones, bones, skin, and even hair. Observed annually on November 14, this day serves as a reminder for individuals to recognize their risks and initiatives for proactive health management.

The 2025 theme, “Know Your Risk, Know Your Response,” aims to motivate individuals to dig deeper and understand the internal mechanisms of diabetes. Experts assert that being informed about the condition can empower people to take preventive measures for their health.

Various medical specialists addressed the subtle yet significant ways diabetes can compromise bodily function.

Dr. Shobha Gupta, an IVF expert, noted that diabetes can disrupt hormonal balance in women. She highlighted that numerous women in their 30s and 40s experience irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and fertility challenges linked to insulin resistance. According to her, adopting lifestyle modifications and prioritizing early medical assessments can avert long-term complications.

Orthopaedic specialist Dr. Abhishek Vaish pointed out that diabetes poses risks to bone and joint health. Many patients are unaware that elevated sugar levels can weaken bone integrity, leading to a higher susceptibility to fractures. He emphasized the necessity of regular health screenings and blood sugar regulation for bone wellness.

Cosmetologist Dr. Karuna Malhotra explained how diabetes can manifest through skin and hair conditions. She observed that symptoms like dark patches on the neck, acne, and lackluster skin might signify insulin resistance. Although external treatments can provide temporary relief, she stressed the importance of restoring the body’s internal harmony for lasting results.

Medical professionals caution that while diabetes may often go unnoticed, its repercussions can be severe, affecting the heart, kidneys, nerves, hormones, bones, and skin. Thus, early detection, balanced nutrition, physical activity, and routine medical consultations are essential.

World Diabetes Day serves as a vital reminder not to overlook potential warning signs. With awareness and proactive management, many serious health complications linked to diabetes can be averted.
