Burial of Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu Delayed

Post by : Shakul

Nearly ten months after Edgar Lungu’s passing, his body remains unburied due to an ongoing conflict between his family and the Zambian government. This unusual scenario has attracted significant attention in Zambia and South Africa.

Lungu, who passed away in June of the previous year in a Pretoria hospital at the age of 68, had a family that preferred his burial in South Africa, while the Zambian authorities insisted on a state funeral in his homeland.

The contention partly stems from the political rivalry between Lungu and the current President, Hakainde Hichilema. As per family statements, Lungu had wished for Hichilema's absence from his funeral, leading to their refusal of a formal ceremony in Zambia.

In contrast, the government has maintained that a state funeral is crucial to honor a former president, leading them to pursue legal avenues to assert custody over the body and prepare a burial site in Zambia, which currently remains vacant.

The situation escalated when authorities, with assistance from South African officials, momentarily seized control of the body. This was soon countered by a court ruling mandating the remains return to the funeral home, citing the action as procedural misconduct.

Prior legal decisions had shown support for the government’s request for repatriation, even establishing a date for the transfer. However, the latest developments have further complicated the legal proceedings, potentially leading to more court actions.

This case underscores the persistence of political strife beyond a leader’s death, while simultaneously raising concerns over legal jurisdiction, family preferences, and the responsibilities of the state in managing the remains of influential figures.
