NWSL 2025 Championship: Washington Spirit Set to Battle Gotham FC

NWSL 2025 Championship: Washington Spirit Set to Battle Gotham FC

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The stage is set for the 2025 NWSL Championship final, where Washington Spirit will take on Gotham FC on Saturday night at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. The kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time, featuring two teams with markedly different journeys this season. For Washington Spirit, this match represents a chance to reclaim their glory after last year's loss, while Gotham FC aims to prove their unexpected playoff success is no fluke.

For Spirit striker Gift Monday, this game bears significant personal weight. She has played a pivotal role in propelling the Spirit to the final, all while coping with the passing of her father, who also coached her. Monday expressed, “I think of him all the time. If he were here, I would have gotten him a plane ticket to ensure he was in VVIP for this Final.” Her father's memory has fueled her during the playoffs, and she honored him by dedicating her quarterfinal goal to him following his funeral in Nigeria.

Monday's path in the NWSL has been extraordinary. After joining Washington Spirit from UD Tenerife in Spain this March, she swiftly acclimated to the league. Her goal is to net as many goals as she can to assist the team. She remarked, “As a team, we’re not surprised to be in the Final as we genuinely worked hard to get here. Our achievement isn't due to luck or chance.”

Goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury, the team’s veteran player, described this squad as the best she has competed with. The Spirit faced numerous hurdles this season, including injuries, players on maternity leave, and a coaching shift when Jonatan Giráldez departed for OL Lyonnes in France. Defender Tara McKeown, who was named NWSL Defender of the Year, recalled, “There were times when our injured report listed up to 14 players, yet the next player stepped up to pull us through those challenges.”

Washington has showcased impressive form late in the season, maintaining a 14-game unbeaten streak from August to mid-October that included seven wins. They advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Portland Thorns at Audi Field, where Rosemonde Kouassi set up Monday for the first goal and Croix Bethune contributed the second. Head coach Adrián González acknowledged the team effort, stating, “We’re witnessing the synergy we’ve developed, and it truly reflects a great team effort.”

Gotham FC, who ended the regular season in eighth place, has crafted a compelling underdog narrative, defeating powerhouse teams like Kansas City Current and Orlando Pride during the playoffs. Under the guidance of coach Juan Carlos Amorós, the roster boasts talents such as Ann-Katrin Berger, Esther González, Rose Lavelle, Emily Sonnett, and emerging star Jaedyn Shaw. The team also claimed the inaugural CONCACAF W Championship Cup in May, boosting their confidence.

The historical rivalry between Spirit and Gotham stands as the most frequently contested matchup in NWSL history, with Saturday marking their 44th encounter. This season, Washington has struggled against Gotham, unable to score in three previous matchups. Monday noted, “Gotham has always posed challenges for us. I’ve faced them three times, and it was tough each time. I’m eager to see how my game has evolved since then.”

Trinity Rodman, another crucial player for the Spirit, remains focused on securing the championship despite uncertainties surrounding contracts and injuries. Fans are rallying in watch parties throughout the D.C. area, demonstrating overwhelming support for their team.

With both sides at full strength and everything at stake, the NWSL final is set to be an intense, emotional, and memorable showdown. While the Spirit strive to convert last year's disappointment into a victory, Gotham seeks to cap their underdog journey with success.
