Aryna Sabalenka Begins Australian Open 2026 Journey Lacking Title Defence

As the World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka returns to the Australian Open amid high expectations, yet her journey this year carries a distinct lack of reassurance. The Belarusian athlete holds the status of a favorite in Melbourne but arrives without a title to defend and without the recent streak of victories that characterized her previous appearances at this Grand Slam.

Sabalenka, a two-time champion at Melbourne Park, previously regarded it as her domain, achieving an impressive 20-match winning streak. However, that impressive run was halted in the last final when Madison Keys from the U.S. surprised her, preventing Sabalenka from securing her third consecutive Australian Open title, a feat not achieved in over twenty years since Martina Hingis.

Despite last year’s setback, Sabalenka remains unchallenged at the pinnacle of women’s tennis. Whether she can mentally regroup and reestablish her dominance on Rod Laver Arena is a key storyline for this year’s Australian Open.
