India's Long Weekend Schedule for 2026: Monthly Travel Suggestions

India's Long Weekend Schedule for 2026: Monthly Travel Suggestions

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Planning ahead for your vacations can significantly reduce stress and financial burdens, allowing individuals to maximize their time off. A long-weekend calendar for 2026 is now circulating, assisting both travelers and professionals in tracking important holidays, festival breaks, and extended weekends throughout the year.

This calendar illustrates how adding a single leave day can transform a regular weekend into an extended getaway, perfect for vacations or family gatherings. Below is a month-by-month guide to India's long weekends in 2026.

January: Kickstart the Year with Extended Getaways

The first major stretch occurs from January 1–4. Since New Year’s Day lands on a Thursday, taking Friday off leads to a four-day weekend.

An additional short break comes with Makar Sankranti on January 14.

Later in the month, from January 23–26, a longer break arises. Vasant Panchami on the 23rd, in conjunction with the weekend and Republic Day on Monday, gives ample days for relaxation or travel plans.

February: A Mid-Month Respite

Mahashivratri falls on February 15, providing a mid-month pause. Towards the end of February, the 28th links with the following Holi week, making it an excellent time for a vacation.

March: A Month of Festivities

March starts on a Sunday, with Holi celebrated on the 3rd. This aligns with the last weekend of February, offering a four-day respite.

From March 20–22, Eid al-Fitr provides another long weekend. Later, from March 26–31, travel opportunities arise with Ram Navami on Thursday; taking Friday off allows for an extended weekend along with Mahavir Jayanti on Monday.

April to June: Multiple Holiday Opportunities

April boasts Good Friday and Ram Navami, opening doors for long weekends. Summer breaks and school holidays make this an ideal season for family outings.

May brings Labour Day on the 1st and Buddha Purnima observed in some states, giving workers chances for extended time off.

While June may appear quieter, there are still short weekends available for mini-vacations or city escapes.

July to September: The Coming Festive Season

Local festivals such as Rath Yatra take place in July. August is particularly favorable for travel with Independence Day on the 15th and Raksha Bandhan, which, when merged with weekends, can provide long breaks.

September includes Ganesh Chaturthi, presenting more travel opportunities, particularly for short trips across India.

October to December: Holidays to End the Year

October features Dussehra, while November's Diwali festivities offer some of the longest holiday experiences of the year. Taking a few additional leave days around Diwali can significantly enhance the holiday experience.

December closes the year with Christmas and New Year’s Eve, providing more opportunities for extensive holidays or travel at year-end.

Travel Tips

Book Early: High demand for flights and hotels during long weekends means that planning ahead can help cut costs.

Smart Leave Planning: Merging festival holidays with a single leave day can help maximize vacation time.

Verify State-specific Holidays: Some festivals are region-specific, so ensure local holidays are checked before making travel arrangements.

By utilizing this 2026 long-weekend calendar, travelers can ensure stress-free vacations and optimize their leisure time. Whether planning a trip with family, a brief city retreat, or a festive celebration, understanding the holiday clusters will facilitate better planning.
