Global astronomers are intensively observing 3I/ATLAS, a unique interstellar comet that has surprised experts with a sudden increase in velocity and an unexpected color transformation. Detected by the ATLAS telescope in Chile last July, this comet has now joined the rare cohort of celestial bodies from beyond our solar system, alongside Oumuamua and Borisov.
As 3I/ATLAS nears the Sun, its behavior diverges from typical comet activity. On October 29, it exhibited a significant brightness enhancement and shifted to an eye-catching blue, suggesting intriguing dynamics under its frosty exterior. Its speed has surged to an incredible 2,44,600 kmph, propelled by a mysterious force that defies simple gravitational explanations.
Remarkably, observations indicate that the comet lacks a tail, a common characteristic anticipated when solar radiation leads to the release of gas and dust. This absence has left scientists scratching their heads, given that around 13% of the comet’s mass should have resulted in a visible tail.
The change in the comet’s color, once perceived as highly variable, is now recognized as a result of its gas coma becoming highlighted as it begins to emit gases under solar heat. The previously subtle blue-green tint of the coma has intensified, rendering the comet brighter than before.
Looking ahead, 3I/ATLAS is projected to head toward Jupiter by March 2026, presenting astronomers with further chances to investigate its peculiar behaviors. Observatories worldwide remain vigilant in monitoring this cosmic traveler, eager to discover more about its origins and enigmatic activities.
