5 People Die, 11 Hurt in Car Accident on Oman Road

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A tragic car crash involving three vehicles occurred early Friday morning on Sultan Said bin Taimur Road, near the area of Maqshan in Oman’s Dhofar Governorate, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) confirmed in an official statement on social media.

The accident, which took place around 7:00 AM, resulted in the deaths of five people and injuries to eleven others, including children.

Who Were the Victims?

According to the police, the deceased include two Omani citizens and three Emirati nationals. The identities of the victims have not been made public yet, as authorities are in the process of informing families.

The injured include:

  • Two Omanis

  • Nine Emiratis, five of whom are children

Emergency officials reported that the severity of the injuries varies, with some victims in critical condition and others suffering from moderate to minor wounds.

Emergency response was immediate.

Following the accident, emergency services quickly arrived at the scene. Ambulances, rescue units, and police officers coordinated efforts to provide first aid, transport the injured to nearby medical facilities, and manage traffic in the area.

The Royal Oman Police commended the quick action of first responders, which helped in controlling the situation and ensuring that those injured received timely medical attention.

Authorities Begin Investigation

The Royal Oman Police have launched an official investigation into the cause of the crash. While full details have not yet been released, authorities said they are reviewing:

  • Road conditions

  • Weather reports

  • Vehicle damage

  • Eyewitness statements

They are also examining if speeding, driver error, or vehicle malfunction played a role in the deadly collision.

The ROP stressed the importance of road safety awareness and urged all drivers to exercise caution, especially on long-distance roads like Sultan Said bin Taimur Road.

Community in Mourning

The incident has sparked grief and sorrow across both Oman and the UAE, as news of the deaths of both Omani and Emirati nationals quickly spread. Social media has been filled with condolences and prayers for the victims and their families.

Many people, including public figures and local residents, have expressed their sadness and urged for better road safety measures, particularly in high-risk areas and long highways known for heavy vehicle traffic.

About Sultan Said bin Taimur Road

Sultan Said bin Taimur Road is a major highway in southern Oman, connecting several towns and cities in the Dhofar region. It is frequently used by locals, tourists, and cargo vehicles traveling between the interior and coastal areas.

The road is known for its long stretches, and while it is generally considered safe, accidents have occurred in the past due to speeding, fatigue, or weather conditions like fog and sandstorms.

Cross-Border Travel and UAE-Oman Connection

Oman and the United Arab Emirates share strong family and travel ties, with frequent movement between the countries. Emirati families often travel to Oman during holidays or on road trips, especially through Dhofar, which is known for its cooler climate during the Khareef (monsoon) season.

This makes the accident even more tragic, as it involves members from both neighboring Gulf nations who regularly use this route for leisure and family visits.

Official Condolences and Public Reaction

While no official statement has yet been released from the governments of Oman or the UAE, it is expected that condolences will be offered to the families of the victims.

Public response online has been filled with heartbreak, with hashtags related to the accident gaining traction across social media platforms in Oman and the UAE. Many are calling for:

  • Stricter road patrols

  • Speed control systems on rural highways

  • Awareness campaigns on driving long distances safely

Road Safety Still a Major Concern

This accident highlights the continued challenges of road safety in the region. Despite improvements in infrastructure, human error, fatigue, and high speed still contribute to a large number of road fatalities every year.

Authorities in Oman have previously taken steps such as:

  • Increasing highway patrols

  • Installing more traffic cameras

  • Launching awareness campaigns in schools and on media

However, experts say that more driver education and enforcement may be needed to prevent future tragedies.

Families Urged to Travel Safely

As the summer season sees more family road trips and cross-border travel, the Royal Oman Police has once again reminded the public to:

  • Check vehicle condition before long trips.

  • Rest adequately before driving.

  • Avoid distractions such as phones.

  • Use child safety seats for young passengers.

  • Observe speed limits and traffic laws.

These steps, while basic, can save lives.

The loss of five lives, including children, and the injury of eleven others in this tragic crash is a painful reminder of the importance of road safety. Families in Oman and the UAE are mourning, and officials are working hard to uncover the cause and prevent future accidents.

As we await more details from the investigation, the focus now is on supporting the injured and the grieving families while reinforcing the need for responsible driving practices.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may those injured make a full and speedy recovery.
