5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Bangladesh, Shakes Eastern India

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On Friday morning, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake jolted Bangladesh, sending mild tremors rippling through eastern India. The quake struck at 10:08 am IST, with its epicentre situated roughly 14 kilometres from Narsingdi, and about 10 kilometres east-southeast of Dhaka.

Residents in Kolkata and nearby regions reported feeling the shaking, with fans swinging and items on walls swaying slightly. Many took to social media to share videos and images capturing the surprise of the tremors.

Tremors were also detected in West Bengal's areas such as Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and Cooch Behar. Light shaking was also experienced in states like Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. Authorities have stated that, as of now, there are no reported injuries or damages.

According to experts, earthquakes in this region are caused by the interactions between the Indian tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate. This area, which includes northern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, is known for seismic activity, frequently experiencing moderate to strong earthquakes that can be felt across borders.

In a related event, a separate earthquake measuring 3.9 struck Pakistan on Thursday at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes often inflict more damage since the seismic waves travel diminished distances to the surface, leading to stronger ground motion.

Residents are advised to be alert for aftershocks and to adhere to safety recommendations if additional tremors occur. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will release updates as further information becomes available.
