A 6.0-magnitude earthquake jolted the Anchorage metropolitan area in Alaska on Thursday morning, creating minor tremors across various communities but resulting in no considerable damage, as per the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake struck at 8:11 a.m. local time, occurring at a depth of 69 kilometers (43 miles). USGS identified the epicenter as 12 kilometers (7 miles) west-northwest of Susitna, about 108 kilometers (67 miles) northwest of Anchorage.

Inspectors Report No Major Damage

Local officials promptly initiated inspections throughout the area. Mayor Suzanne LaFrance communicated on social platforms that municipal inspectors found no significant issues in critical public infrastructure, ensuring that core services remained functional.

Emergency responders also reported that there was no threat of a tsunami, as confirmed by the U.S. Tsunami Warning System.

Residents Use Humor to Cope

Although the earthquake elicited moments of worry, many residents turned to social media with humor, dubbing the holiday "Shakesgiving", a light-hearted response that resonated widely online.

High Seismic Activity in Alaska

Alaska is recognized as the most earthquake-prone state in the U.S. and is one of the most seismically active areas globally, according to data from the USGS. The state regularly experiences a magnitude-7 earthquake approximately every year.

Thursday’s quake was the most significant event in south-central Alaska since 2021, according to local broadcaster KTUU TV.
