Oman Hosts Flash Floods Meeting on Dams and Safety

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Ninth International Symposium on Flash Floods in Wadi Systems started on Tuesday at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. The event is organized by the Water Research Centre in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Oman Water Society, and Kyoto University of Japan.

This two-day symposium brings together experts and researchers from Oman and 16 other countries. Over 76 scientific papers are being presented, focusing on the causes, impacts, and management of flash floods and dams. The discussions aim to improve understanding and practical solutions for managing floods in urban and rural areas.

Dr Ali bin Khamis al Maktoomi, Director of the Water Research Centre, opened the symposium. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and continuous research in dealing with water challenges. He stressed that creating plans and programs to integrate flood management, water resource development, and sustainability is essential for the region’s safety and growth.

The symposium covers climate-related topics such as rising cyclones, tropical storms, low-pressure systems, and changing rainfall patterns. These weather events are leading to more frequent and severe floods that affect cities, infrastructure, facilities, and ecological systems. Participants discussed strategies to reduce the damage caused by these floods.

Experts emphasized the need for new policies and innovative technologies to enhance flood management. This includes using modern forecasting tools, designing resilient dams, and preparing urban areas to withstand extreme weather events. The symposium also serves as a platform to learn from international experiences and successful practices in flood mitigation.

Several presentations focus on how climate change is affecting Oman and neighboring regions. Researchers are examining patterns in rainfall, river flow, and wadi systems to predict potential flood areas and develop solutions to minimize their impact. Effective management of flash floods is vital for protecting communities, agriculture, and natural habitats.

The event also encourages knowledge exchange among scientists, policymakers, and engineers. Discussions include risk assessment, water storage, dam safety, and emergency response measures. By sharing research and experiences, the symposium aims to support the development of sustainable water resource strategies that balance human needs and environmental protection.

In addition, the symposium highlights the role of urban planning and infrastructure in reducing flood damage. Designing proper drainage systems, maintaining dams, and improving early warning systems are key topics of focus. These measures will help cities and communities prepare for future climate challenges.

Overall, the 9th International Symposium on Flash Floods in Wadi Systems is a significant platform for enhancing regional and global cooperation. It promotes effective flood management, supports sustainable water use, and builds resilience against climate-related hazards. The collaboration between local and international experts is expected to strengthen Oman’s capacity to address water and flood challenges.
