Abu Dhabi is embarking on a groundbreaking journey in the food sector through a significant partnership aimed at establishing a protein fermentation ecosystem within the emirate. The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) has joined forces with The EVERY Company and Vivici to revolutionize the alternative protein sector, utilizing cutting-edge biotechnology solutions focused on sustainability, efficiency, and a robust presence in the global market.
This innovative protein fermentation technique leverages microorganisms for the production of high-value proteins, offering a scalable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional animal-based protein sources. The collaboration is contemplating the construction of a state-of-the-art, 4-million-litre industrial facility that adheres to international food safety and Halal standards while providing multi-tenant spaces for other protein start-ups.
This project dovetails with Abu Dhabi's AgriFood Growth and Water Abundance (AGWA) cluster, which aims to secure regional food supplies and tackle water scarcity through innovative technologies. With forecasts predicting the global protein fermentation market to escalate from US$3.03 billion in 2024 to US$54.04 billion by 2032, the emirate is strategically positioning itself as a center for sustainable food innovation.
Furthermore, the initiative is expected to pave the way for regulatory frameworks regarding fermented proteins in the UAE, facilitating smoother commercial approvals for both local and regional markets. The partnership will also investigate export avenues via the UAE’s Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs), thereby accessing lucrative markets across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
In addition to production, the collaboration underscores the importance of talent nurturing by partnering with local universities, research institutions, and training organizations. This initiative aims to cultivate a workforce proficient in biotechnology and food science, facilitating knowledge transfer and positioning Abu Dhabi as a key player in next-generation food technologies.
Vivici and The EVERY Company contribute distinguished expertise in precision fermentation and alternative proteins. Vivici has successfully launched nature-identical whey protein, achieving self-affirmed GRAS status within its initial year, while The EVERY Company possesses a foundational patent for its precision-fermented egg protein, unlocking new avenues in food and beverage innovation.
Through this endeavor, Abu Dhabi not only aims to fortify its domestic food resilience but also aspires to set an exemplary benchmark for the region, showcasing how scientific advancements can tackle global challenges while generating economic and technological benefits.
