Abu Dhabi Hosts High-Level Dialogue on Methane Mitigation

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Frontier25 and the Global Methane Hub have held a high-level policy dialogue in Abu Dhabi to discuss methane mitigation and its role in addressing climate change. The meeting was convened by Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, CEO of Frontier25, and brought together senior representatives from government, regulatory authorities, and industry.

The discussion focused on the early findings and recommendations from a joint research project that aims to strengthen methane reduction efforts across key sectors.

Sheikha Shamma Highlights Importance of Protecting the Atmosphere

Addressing the gathering, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan spoke about the importance of Earth's atmosphere and the need to protect its natural balance.

She said, “There are few things that we take for granted more than the air that we breathe. But this invisible resource is a delicate equation – one that sets Earth apart from other planets. It is thanks to the uniquely perfect movements, pressures, and balances of oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen in our air and wider atmosphere that life as we know it is able to continue.”

She added, “We know now that human intervention and increasing industrialisation over the last two centuries have been gradually warming our atmosphere, upsetting these balances, and breaching our planetary boundaries. We are continuously learning of the damage that is causing to our climate, our environment, and human health.”

Research Focuses on Climate, Air Quality and Public Health

Frontier25 said that while the climate and economic benefits of reducing methane emissions are already well known, the impact of methane mitigation on air quality and public health has received less attention.

As part of its research, the organisation carried out international benchmarking, reviewed the UAE's policy landscape, and engaged with stakeholders from different sectors. Based on these findings, Frontier25 developed practical policy recommendations to support stronger methane reduction measures.

The policy dialogue gave senior decision-makers an opportunity to review these recommendations and provide feedback before the final report is published.

Methane Remains a Major Climate Challenge

According to the research discussed during the event, methane is responsible for around 30% of global warming since the Industrial Revolution. Over a 20-year period, methane has a global warming potential that is approximately 80 times greater than carbon dioxide.

The study also noted that cutting methane emissions quickly during this decade could help prevent nearly 0.3°C of global warming by the 2040s.

In addition to climate benefits, reducing methane emissions could help prevent 26 million tons of crop losses, avoid 255,000 premature deaths, and reduce 775,000 asthma-related hospitalisations.

Fossil Fuels, Agriculture and Waste Are Key Sources

The discussion highlighted that most human-caused methane emissions come from three major sectors: fossil fuels, agriculture, and waste.

Participants explored ways to strengthen methane action across these areas through improved policies and collaboration between governments, regulators, and industry.

Final Report Expected in Third Quarter of 2026

Frontier25 confirmed that it will publish its final report in the third quarter of 2026. The report will include the findings of the research project along with insights and recommendations gathered during the Abu Dhabi policy dialogue.
