The Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship commenced today, a part of the prestigious Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship. The inaugural day showcased a spirited atmosphere filled with energy and extensive participation from renowned clubs and academies, both from the UAE and internationally. Young competitors were eager to display their skills honed over months of dedicated training.
Competition on Sunday was exclusively for athletes aged 10 to 17, who competed across grey, yellow, orange, and green belt categories. Each match highlighted their technical proficiency, reflecting their hard work and commitment. Despite their age, these young athletes demonstrated confidence, discipline, and sharp techniques, while remaining focused throughout their respective matches. Proud parents and coaches in attendance celebrated their dedication.
This marks the seventeenth edition of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, held under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. His support underlines the UAE’s commitment to nurturing jiu-jitsu and fostering young talent. Over the years, the championship has evolved into a leading jiu-jitsu event globally, drawing thousands of participants each year.
Senior officials and leaders from the UAE’s jiu-jitsu scene and international community attended today’s events, including Abdulmunem Alsayed Mohammed Alhashmi, the Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, and Odonbaatar Shijeekhuu, the Mongolian Ambassador to the UAE. Their strong presence emphasized their backing for the sport and the development of the upcoming generation of athletes.
UAEJJF Board Member Yousef Abdullah Al Batran commended the opening day, noting advancements in both organization and skill. He emphasized that these young athletes symbolize the future of jiu-jitsu and will contribute to the national team’s growth. He highlighted the championship's international engagement, showcasing Abu Dhabi's credibility in hosting significant sporting events.
Redha Monfaredi, Vice President of the Jiu-Jitsu Asian Union, expressed pride in attending this key event. He pointed out that the championship elevates the global standard of jiu-jitsu and encourages broader participation in the sport. He acknowledged the UAE’s pivotal role in promoting jiu-jitsu at regional and international levels.
Fernando Almeida, coach at UFC Gym Middle East, mentioned this is their third participation in the event. For many athletes, it signifies their first significant international competition. He noted that such events accelerate athlete development by allowing them to encounter and engage with young talents with diverse skills and styles. His team, consisting of 16 athletes, aims to gain experience, confidence, and motivation.
Tomorrow (Monday), competitions will shift to youth blue and purple belt divisions. Participants anticipate an even more competitive atmosphere, with top young talents from both the UAE and abroad ready for the challenge. Fans, coaches, and families are excited for another thrilling day of action.
