Dipika Kakar's Brave Fight Against Liver Cancer Revealed

Post by : Meena Hassan

Famous for her portrayal in Sasural Simar Ka, actress Dipika Kakar has bravely spoken out about her ongoing battle with liver cancer. In a candid interview during a recent podcast episode featuring Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa, Dipika detailed her diagnosis, treatment process, and the emotional impact on her and her family.

Confronting the Diagnosis with Determination

Dipika revealed that the diagnosis was a shocking surprise to both her and her medical professionals. “Honestly, my surgeon Dr. Somnath Chattopadhyay and my family doctor Dr. Tushar Shah were just as astonished. They couldn’t quite understand how this occurred,” she explained. While some toxicity was suspected, a definite cause was never established. Dipika added, “I have never smoked and have always aimed for a balanced diet. Sure, I enjoy food, but nothing excessive or detrimental to my health.”

Early Signs and Misdiagnosis

Dipika recalled the initial symptoms that hinted at a serious issue. At first, she thought the discomfort was due to gallbladder pain, which started during her pregnancy with her son, Ruhaan. Medical tests conducted during pregnancy concentrated on her baby, revealing nothing abnormal in her liver function or blood work.

Nevertheless, following childbirth, the pain lingered and intensified, severely impacting both sides of her abdomen. “It became unbearable, and I told my husband Shoaib that something was definitely wrong,” she stated. Initially, doctors attributed the pain to acidity, but further assessments were pursued when her condition didn’t improve.

Finding the Tumor

Subsequent examinations, including a CT scan, indicated both gallbladder stones and a concerning 9-centimeter tumor in her liver. The doctor initially prescribed medication for symptom relief, but as pain persisted, more tests confirmed the severity of her diagnosis.

She underscored the importance of precise diagnostic imaging during her treatment: “I will undergo my FAPI scan again in the first week of November. A FAPI scan, akin to a CT scan, is specifically intended to locate cancer cells in the body. It gives doctors insight into the cancer's spread before we proceed with surgery or treatment.”

Treatment Journey and Current Condition

Dipika underwent a surgical procedure that successfully removed about 22% of her liver, including the entire 11-centimeter tumor. She expressed her gratitude that the cancer was localized to the tumor and hadn’t metastasized. “During my last FAPI scan, no cancer cells were detected elsewhere in my body,” she confirmed.

At present, Dipika is following a targeted oral therapy regimen, similar to chemotherapy, aimed at destroying cancer cells and preventing recurrence. This treatment is planned for two years. Continuous monitoring, including blood tests and tumor marker evaluations, has thus far yielded positive results, with no indications of cancer’s return.

Looking Forward: Hope and Awareness

Dipika highlighted the critical nature of ongoing vigilance in her recovery. “We have been routinely monitoring my health, and thankfully, all results have been normal. Yet, periodic scans remain essential to ensure everything stays under control,” she noted.

Despite facing both emotional and physical challenges, Dipika stays resolute and optimistic, relying on her faith and the support of her family to navigate this tough journey. Her willingness to share her health story has struck a chord with many, offering encouragement to those battling illness.
