ADNOC Drilling Company PJSC has proudly revealed the successful completion and acceptance of the AD-300, the firm's first entirely automated and AI-integrated walking island rig. Delivered almost three months earlier than anticipated, the rig's early arrival facilitates quicker operational commencement, laying the groundwork for enhanced revenue generation in line with the company’s cutting-edge rig initiative.
Standing 50 metres tall, akin to a 15-storey building, the AD-300 rig has a weight of around 2,000 tonnes. It is infused with sophisticated automation technologies, robotics, digital systems, artificial intelligence, and hybrid power capabilities, with the bonus of being able to connect to the electrical grid for improved operational efficiency and reduced emissions.
A standout feature of the AD-300 is its innovative automated walking mechanism, allowing the rig to navigate between wells without the need for deconstruction. The rig is also fitted with pipe-handling automation and AI-driven monitoring systems that minimize personnel risks in challenging offshore environments.
Abdulla Ateya Al Messabi, the CEO of ADNOC Drilling, remarked on this achievement, stating, “The arrival of the AD-300 represents a transformative step in our approach to executing large-scale, tech-driven energy projects. By leveraging automation, AI, and robotics, we are elevating safety measures, increasing efficiency, and ensuring reliable operational outcomes. As the first in a series of six rigs under our initiative, AD-300 exemplifies our capability to deliver high-value assets ahead of schedule and bolster ADNOC’s production expansion plans, reinforcing the UAE’s position in advanced energy solutions.”
Currently deployed offshore on one of ADNOC’s artificial islands, the AD-300 is the initial rig of six planned under a $1.54 billion contract awarded by ADNOC Offshore for 2024-2025. This initiative is anticipated to revolutionize offshore well delivery through improved efficiency, speed, and consistency.
The early deployment of the AD-300, alongside the gradual rollout of the additional rigs, is projected to enhance revenue predictability and support ongoing business growth well into the latter half of 2026 and beyond.
Commenting further, Tayba Abdulrahim Al Hashmi, CEO of ADNOC Offshore, noted, “In an era where reliable energy supply is crucial, the UAE is prepared to meet global demands. The AD-300 and our next-gen island rigs are pivotal in driving our growth, augmenting ADNOC's production capabilities, and delivering sustained value for our stakeholders and the nation.”
The rig also boasts integrated data systems that facilitate real-time operational analysis, thus optimizing performance and enabling predictive maintenance. ADNOC Drilling has confirmed that the AD-301 is currently being deployed, with the remaining rigs planned for delivery up until 2027.
Upon completion, this six-rig initiative aims to establish one of the most sophisticated island rig fleets globally, further enhancing ADNOC Drilling’s role in supporting ADNOC’s upstream expansion strategy and long-term production goals.
