The Port of Los Angeles, the busiest seaport in the United States, recorded its second-highest cargo volume for July, supported by strong demand for consumer products, manufacturing equipment and components used in data center construction.
The port handled 960,464 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container cargo in July, according to port data. Imports accounted for 499,552 TEUs, highlighting continued strength in U.S. demand for goods arriving from overseas.
Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka said the current level of demand could support another strong month in August. Based on cargo activity so far, the port expects to handle more than 900,000 container units in August.
The strong performance at Los Angeles comes as container imports remain an important indicator of U.S. economic activity. Analysts, investors and traders closely monitor container volumes because they can provide an early indication of consumer demand and business activity.
The neighboring Port of Long Beach also reported strong July results. It handled 928,508 TEUs during the month, including 467,461 TEUs of imports, making it the port's second-busiest July on record.
Together, the two major Southern California ports continue to play a critical role in the movement of goods into the United States.
Port officials and shipping industry experts said the traditional peak shipping season began earlier than usual this year. Many retailers have already received holiday merchandise, with businesses bringing products into the country earlier to manage tariff uncertainty and supply-chain risks.
Some retailers also accelerated shipments ahead of the expiration of a 10% global Section 122 tariff in late July. The tariff changes were followed by new duties of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 countries, linked to allegations involving forced labor.
The early arrival of holiday merchandise helped keep container imports at elevated levels during July.
Despite the strong numbers, Seroka said the current pace of imports is unlikely to continue indefinitely.
The National Retail Federation expects imports to remain strong in August before gradually slowing toward the end of the year. This pattern would reflect the earlier arrival of holiday goods and a return to more normal seasonal shipping activity.
The global container shipping industry, valued at around $120 billion, has traditionally depended heavily on retail merchandise. Retail-related goods have historically represented a significant share of container volumes, particularly during the peak season ahead of the year-end holidays.
However, the type of cargo moving through major U.S. ports is changing.
The growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centers and electricity generation is creating new sources of container traffic. Shipping companies are increasingly transporting products linked to electrification and the expansion of power capacity.
These goods include batteries, solar panel components, wind turbine parts, industrial equipment and cooling systems for data centers.
Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc recently highlighted this shift, noting that containers from Asia have traditionally carried products such as furniture, clothing, shoes, food and other department-store goods.
Today, a growing share of cargo is connected to technology, energy and infrastructure projects.
The July figures indicate that U.S. import demand remains resilient despite changes in tariffs and continued uncertainty in global trade.
The Port of Los Angeles' 960,464 TEUs in July demonstrate the continued strength of cargo movement through Southern California. However, the expected moderation in imports later this year suggests that the exceptionally strong pace may ease once retailers complete their early holiday shipments.
The rise in shipments related to AI data centers, energy infrastructure and electrification also shows how changing investment trends are reshaping the global container shipping industry.
