Kuwait authorities have foiled an attempt to illegally export large quantities of government-subsidized food supplies to Sri Lanka.
Customs inspectors at Shuwaikh Port seized more than 2,200 subsidized food items that were concealed inside six 40-foot containers during export procedures. The containers were reportedly scheduled to be shipped to Sri Lanka.
The General Administration of Customs intercepted the containers before they could leave Kuwait after inspections raised concerns about their contents.
A detailed inspection found that the containers were carrying food products that are subsidized by the Kuwaiti government and are intended for the local market.
The seized items included:
The goods were allegedly being transported for export despite being intended to support consumers in Kuwait.
According to the customs authorities, the six 40-foot containers belonged to several shipping and export companies. Customs officials stopped the shipment while it was undergoing export procedures at Shuwaikh Port.
The inspection prevented the subsidized food products from being taken out of Kuwait and redirected to an overseas market.
Kuwait provides subsidies for several essential food products to help maintain affordable supplies for consumers and protect food security.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of ensuring that subsidized goods remain available to their intended beneficiaries. The illegal export of such products could affect local supplies and undermine the government's subsidy system.
The latest seizure is part of Kuwait's continuing efforts to monitor the movement of essential commodities and prevent subsidized food from being diverted for unauthorized export.
The General Administration of Customs said the prescribed customs and legal procedures have been taken against the containers and the seized goods.
The case has also been referred to the relevant authorities for further investigation and legal action under Kuwait's applicable laws.
The seizure highlights Kuwait Customs' ongoing efforts to strengthen controls at ports, protect national food security and prevent the illegal movement of subsidized essential commodities outside the country.
