Kickoff for the 4th AFC Grassroots Football Conference in Asia

Post by : Meena Hassan

The 4th AFC Grassroots Football Conference launched on Tuesday, uniting football leaders, specialists, and officials from across Asia to deliberate on the continent's football development.

Hosted by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the conference aims to strengthen the sport's grassroots foundations, shaping a promising new era for football growth in Asia.

This year's event is themed “Grassroots Football in Asia: The Next Chapter.” Over three days, it will emphasize nurturing young talent, enhancing inclusivity, and fostering football communities at all levels.

The conference commenced with the AFC Special Awards, which honored individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to grassroots and youth football. Celebrating the hard work of coaches, volunteers, and administrators, these awards recognized efforts to broaden access to the sport within local communities.

During the opening ceremony, AFC officials highlighted the vital role grassroots football plays in developing future stars and maintaining the sport's growth. The AFC Special Awards acknowledged the dedication of teachers, coaches, and mentors who inspire countless young players in their pursuits.

This recognition underscores that the success of Asian football relies on elite competition as well as sustainable investments in youth programs, community engagement, and long-term player development.

Over three days, attendees representing AFC Member Associations (MAs) will gain insights from international experts, including key speakers from FIFA and UEFA, providing guidance on enhancing participation, inclusion, and sustainability in grassroots football.

The conference will feature interactive sessions and presentations on global best practices, aimed at inspiring adaptable strategies for local contexts across Asia to bolster football ecosystems from the ground up.

A notable moment from the opening day was AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh's keynote address, where he discussed global trends in grassroots football and outlined Asian football's anticipated trajectory.

Roxburgh stressed the importance of robust coaching education, improved youth engagement, and inclusivity for girls and marginalized communities within football initiatives. His remarks set the stage for the upcoming days, motivating participants to embrace innovative ideas and collaboration.

The remaining conference schedule includes interactive workshops, discussions, and case studies on grassroots football's challenges and opportunities in Asia, focusing on coaching techniques, talent identification, and ensuring accessibility.

Delegates will also investigate how technology, community partnerships, and sustainable projects can enhance football's presence in schools, local clubs, and rural areas.

By the conference's conclusion, AFC officials aspire to outline a clear direction for the upcoming phase of football development in Asia, prioritizing increased participation, improved facilities, and ensuring every aspiring young footballer has access to play.

The 4th AFC Grassroots Football Conference symbolizes the Confederation’s enduring vision of making football a unifying, inclusive, and accessible sport, fostering growth at every level across the continent.
