Shooting Incident Near White House Involves Afghan Ex-Soldier

Post by : Bianca Haleem

An incident outside the White House has sent shockwaves through the nation, as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, opened fire on two National Guard members, resulting in one fatality. Currently hospitalized due to injuries from the confrontation, Lakanwal has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and firearms violations.

The 20-year-old victim, identified as Sarah Beckstrom from West Virginia, died at the scene, while her fellow Guardsman Andrew Wolfe is reported to be in critical condition. Lakanwal faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill. A federal judge has ordered that he remain in custody until a scheduled court hearing on January 14.

Officials have revealed that Lakanwal entered the U.S. through a resettlement initiative following the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in 2021. There are concerns he may have become radicalized after arriving in the U.S., reportedly traveling across the country to execute the shooting on Thanksgiving Eve. Eyewitnesses noted he shouted, “Allahu Akbar!” during the attack.

This incident has triggered a renewed discussion surrounding US asylum policy. Following the shooting, the Trump administration halted visa processing for Afghan nationals and suspended asylum case decisions, citing the need for improved vetting procedures. Lakanwal had previously served in a CIA-backed Afghan unit against the Taliban.

Additionally, the Department of Justice has pointed to another case in Texas involving Mohammad Dawood Alokozay, 30, who was arrested for allegedly making threats of a suicide attack in a viral video.

This tragic event represents a rare yet severe confrontation on U.S. soil involving a resettled Afghan, prompting serious questions about national security, radicalization, and the scrutiny of immigration programs.
