AI Technology Revitalizes Pompeii’s Ancient Frescoes

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Pompeii, Italy — At one of the globe's most renowned archaeological sites, fragments of Roman frescoes thought to be irreparable are being revived. An advanced robotic system, created as part of the EU-funded RePAIR initiative, is now aiding archaeologists in reassembling numerous shattered pieces that have been neglected for years.

This innovative technology signifies a transformative approach to the reconstruction of ancient artifacts. Featuring dual robotic arms with flexible and delicate hands alongside sophisticated vision sensors, the system precisely identifies, lifts, and aligns fresco fragments—accomplishing tasks that would take humans an extensive period of trial and error. Machine-learning models assist in the reconstruction process, uncovering color traces, faded designs, and edge matches barely detectable to the naked eye.

The inception of this initiative in 2021 faced the daunting task hidden within Pompeii’s storage: damaged ceiling paintings from the AD 79 eruption, further shattered during World War II bombings, along with frescoes from the House of the Gladiators, which collapsed in 2010. To ensure safety, replica fragments were created for early testing, enabling the team to fine-tune the robot’s movements while preserving original surfaces.

Engineers collaborated closely with archaeologists as the robot sorted through a mélange of fragments, functioning like an expansive, awkward jigsaw puzzle that spans centuries. Lacking a reference image of the original frescoes, the reconstruction is founded on pattern recognition, texture mapping, and minute pigment indicators held beneath centuries of volcanic ash.

What once required years of painstaking manual effort is now expedited through a partnership of robotics and archaeology, offering a future for long-damaged artwork. As experiments progress within Pompeii, this technology is already hailed as a viable model for restoring heritage at locations worldwide.
