Airbus Initiates Inspections for A320 Fleet Due to Metal Panel Quality Issue

Airbus Initiates Inspections for A320 Fleet Due to Metal Panel Quality Issue

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Airbus has commenced precautionary inspections across its A320 fleet after discovering a quality issue linked to metal panels by a supplier. Approximately 600 aircraft could potentially be impacted, although the company noted that only a subset may necessitate repairs.

This initiative has been described by the European aircraft manufacturer as a "conservative approach," designed to ensure that each potentially affected aircraft undergoes a detailed examination. Airbus confirmed that new panels currently in production comply with all relevant standards.

This announcement follows last week's extensive grounding of thousands of A320 jets for a critical software update, which became necessary after solar radiation interfered with flight control systems. This incident resulted in one aircraft suddenly losing altitude mid-flight and injuring 15 passengers. The software update impacted over 6,000 planes globally, leading to significant travel disruptions coinciding with a busy holiday season.

According to Airbus, the number of planes requiring urgent action is "decreasing day by day" as inspections proceed. Airlines operating the A320, including several major carriers in Europe, the US, and Asia, have been reached out to for additional verification.

While the metal panel issue is unrelated to the earlier software complication, it underscores the ongoing challenges Airbus faces in ensuring safety and reliability within its extensively utilized A320 fleet.
