Al-Jouf Identified as a Major Bird Migration Venue by Photographer

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Saudi Arabia’s environmental diversity is providing ample opportunities for bird photographers to capture migration patterns and local habitats.

Nader Al-Shammari, a photographer whose journey began in 2011, shared insights from his bird photography experiences focused on the Al-Jouf Region. He has also ventured into birdwatching outside of the Kingdom and in the Aseer Region.

Al-Shammari has documented over 230 bird species in Al-Jouf, contributing significantly to the overall 507 species recorded in Saudi Arabia.

He emphasized that Al-Jouf’s distinctive environment makes it a crucial spot for migrating birds. It features varied landscapes, such as mountains, deserts, inland water bodies, and agricultural areas, along with a climate that favors birds during migration.

Numerous migratory birds visit the region and remain for extended periods. Al-Shammari’s photography chronicles both the visiting migratory species and local residents.

Monitoring in Al-Jouf has also highlighted some rare and notable bird species, including the wood pigeon and the greater hoopoe lark, underscoring the ecological significance of this area.

Al-Jouf is establishing itself as a prime destination for birdwatching and wildlife photography in Saudi Arabia.
