On October 23, 2025, Alaska Airlines faced a significant disruption due to a major IT outage, leading to the grounding of all flights across the United States, including those from its regional affiliate, Horizon Air. The issue, which erupted in the afternoon, originated from a breakdown at the airline’s main data center, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to implement a mandatory ground stop at approximately 7:00 pm Pacific Time. This action was taken as a safety precaution while technicians worked diligently to address the problem.
The ramifications were extensive, with over 229 flights being canceled and many others facing delays. Passengers were urged to verify their flight statuses before heading to airports, as disruptions were expected to continue while the airline repositioned aircraft and crews. In contrast, Hawaiian Airlines, also a segment of the Alaska Air Group, operated uninterrupted throughout this period.
Alaska Airlines confirmed that the IT failure was not linked to any cybersecurity threat, assuring that the safety of flights was never compromised. This incident marks the second significant IT breakdown for the airline in 2025, following a similar occurrence in July that resulted in a temporary grounding of flights for about three hours due to hardware issues.
Passengers took to social media to express their frustrations, discussing long wait times and voicing concerns over the airline's handling of repeated recent technical difficulties. The airline acknowledged these inconveniences and pledged to expedite the return to normal operations, highlighting flexible travel options for those impacted.
This IT incident reflects a pervasive challenge in the aviation sector, where an increasing dependency on technology means that any disruption can lead to widespread consequences. Alaska Airlines remains dedicated to ensuring safe travel while proactively addressing these technological challenges to reduce the likelihood of future disruptions.
