Australia’s Albanese Confident on AUKUS Pact After Meeting UK’s Starmer

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed strong confidence that the AUKUS nuclear submarine agreement between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom will move forward smoothly. His comments came after a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on September 26, 2025.

Meeting with UK Prime Minister

During the meeting at 10 Downing Street, Albanese said the discussion focused on the "strongly building" support for AUKUS between Australia and Britain. He did not comment directly on the position of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration is currently reviewing the agreement.

Albanese told reporters, "I have always been confident about AUKUS going ahead. Every meeting I’ve had with officials in the U.S. administration has always been positive about AUKUS." The Australian leader emphasized that discussions with both allies have been encouraging and supportive of the project.

What is AUKUS?

AUKUS is a strategic defense pact signed in 2021 between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The agreement aims to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines. This is part of a broader effort to strengthen security in the Indo-Pacific region, especially to counter China’s growing influence.

Under the pact, the U.S. will sell several Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines to Australia. Later, Britain and Australia will work together to build a new class of submarines called the AUKUS-class submarines. The deal is worth hundreds of billions of dollars and is considered a major boost for defense cooperation between the three countries.

Strategic Importance

The AUKUS pact is seen as a key strategy for maintaining peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region. Nuclear-powered submarines give Australia advanced capabilities, including longer underwater range, higher speed, and stronger defensive and offensive powers. These submarines can stay underwater for months, which gives Australia greater control over its waters and nearby regions.

Albanese highlighted that the agreement strengthens Australia’s ties with both the U.S. and the U.K. and ensures long-term security cooperation. In July 2025, Australia and Britain also signed a treaty to boost cooperation on AUKUS for the next 50 years.

Review by U.S. Administration

While the agreement has strong support from both Australia and Britain, it is currently under formal review by the U.S. administration. The review is led by Elbridge Colby, a senior Pentagon policy official who has been a public critic of certain aspects of the pact. Despite this, Albanese expressed confidence that the review would not affect the overall progress of AUKUS.

He said that discussions with U.S. officials have always been positive, and he sees no reason for the project to slow down.

Upcoming Engagements

During his London visit, Albanese is also scheduled to meet King Charles, who is Australia’s official head of state. These meetings underline Australia’s diplomatic efforts to strengthen relations with its allies while promoting the AUKUS pact and other security initiatives.

Regional Impact

Analysts say the AUKUS agreement is important not only for Australia but also for regional stability. China has criticized the deal, claiming it increases military tensions in the Indo-Pacific. However, supporters argue that the pact is defensive in nature and aims to prevent conflict by maintaining a strong security balance in the region.

The AUKUS submarines will allow Australia to patrol and secure sea routes, respond quickly to threats, and work closely with allies for joint defense operations. Experts see this as a long-term investment in regional peace and a demonstration of close strategic ties between the three countries.
