Alcaraz Focuses on Winning Australian Open Amid Grand Slam Glory

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Carlos Alcaraz has made it clear that winning the Australian Open is at the top of his agenda for the upcoming tennis season. Despite being the reigning champion of both the French Open and US Open, the young Spanish talent stated that lifting the trophy in Melbourne in 2026 is his primary focus. Alcaraz shared these insights during an appearance on the Spanish sports radio show El Partidazo de Cope, shortly after securing the world number one ranking for the year.

The aspiration to conquer the Australian Open has intensified for Alcaraz, considering he has yet to advance beyond the quarter-finals there. He achieved that milestone in both 2024 and 2025, but he hopes for more moving forward. He expressed that winning in Melbourne would carry more weight than repeated victories in other Grand Slam competitions, thus framing it as a personal goal for the new season.

Even with his title as world number one, Alcaraz humbly insists that he does not see himself as the best player globally. He remarked that the ranking does not solely define greatness, as there are many competitors who can challenge him. The Spanish star emphasized his desire to improve and work tirelessly to earn the genuine title of the best.

Reflecting on his previous quarter-final encounter this year, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets, Alcaraz acknowledged the expectation surrounding Djokovic’s potential comeback in January, as he vies for a record 25th Grand Slam title and an 11th Australian Open win. Alcaraz discussed the challenge of facing Djokovic in Melbourne and noted that conquering him there would be a pivotal achievement in his career.

Speaking on his long-term objectives, Alcaraz dreams of exceeding Djokovic's Grand Slam record but recognizes the immense challenge it presents. He candidly stated he would “sign for 23 Grand Slams right now” without a second thought, viewing such a number as both a challenge and a motivating factor.

Alcaraz expressed his desire to retire from the sport with the acclaim of legends like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. Achieving recognition as one of the greats is intertwined with his legacy-building journey, and the Australian Open plays a crucial role in this aspiration.

The 2025 season has emerged as Alcaraz's most successful yet, with three Grand Slam finals to his name, winning both the French Open and the US Open. Although he succumbed to Italian rival Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final, he demonstrated impressive consistency across all surfaces, maintaining his position at the pinnacle of the world rankings and solidifying his status as a dominant figure in tennis this year.

Before diverting his focus entirely towards 2026, Alcaraz is determined to secure his first ATP Finals title. In fine form, he is set to compete against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals. A win in this tournament would mark yet another hallmark achievement in an already extraordinary year.
