Sydney: The tennis world anticipates an exciting start to the 2026 season with top athletes Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Aryna Sabalenka ready to make their mark at the Australian Open. The mixed-team United Cup will kick off the action this Friday in Perth and Sydney, showcasing women's world No. 2 Iga Swiatek and men's No. 3 Alexander Zverev.
Reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka, currently holding the world No. 1 title, begins her journey at the Brisbane International (January 4-11). She faces tough competitors, including past Australian Open winner Madison Keys and world No. 4 Amanda Anisimova.
Meanwhile, the duo of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, affectionately called “Sincaraz” by fans, will sharpen their skills with an exhibition match in South Korea on January 10—this will be their only preparation before the Grand Slam kicks off eight days later.
At just 22, Alcaraz enters the season fresh off securing the ATP year-end No. 1 ranking, thanks to victories at the French Open and US Open. Although he has yet to go beyond the Australian Open quarterfinals, he is determined to excel this year under a new coaching team after parting ways with Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Sinner had a remarkable 2025, defending his Australian Open title and clinching Wimbledon, despite having faced a three-month suspension for doping. His impressive record of 58 wins against only six losses underlines his growing prowess on the circuit.
Novak Djokovic, 38, will commence his season at the Adelaide International on January 12, aiming for his 25th Grand Slam and 11th Australian Open title while recognizing the increasing competition from younger players like Alcaraz and Sinner.
The United Cup will also feature notable talents such as Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Alex de Minaur, along with Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios competing in Brisbane.
On the women’s side, Sabalenka enters 2026 buoyed by her recent successes at the US Open, as well as titles in Brisbane, Madrid, and Miami. While she targets her third Australian Open title, strong competition from Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina looms.
Reflecting on her past triumphs, Sabalenka asserts, “Winning it twice boosts my confidence, but each year presents fresh hurdles.” She is eager to expand her Grand Slam collection.
Iga Swiatek will lead Poland at the United Cup, joining forces with Hubert Hurkacz. They aim to avenge last year’s loss to Team USA in the finals and previous defeat against Germany in 2024. The US team is bolstered by talents like Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz, while Japan makes an impactful debut featuring four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.
The upcoming Australian Open 2026 season promises riveting contests as seasoned champions and emerging stars vie for tennis glory Down Under.
