Amazon has announced a substantial investment plan of $35 billion in India, designed to reshape the nation’s digital and economic framework through artificial intelligence, job creation, and export enhancement. This announcement follows Microsoft’s recent $17.5 billion investment in the country, indicating a growing trust in India's potential for technology and innovation.
Since the inception of its Indian marketplace in 2013, Amazon has cumulatively invested $40 billion, which includes employee wages and infrastructure enhancements. The new investment will concentrate on three main areas: AI-driven digital transformation, increasing exports, and creating job opportunities. This initiative aligns with India's broader national aims for technology integration, manufacturing advancement, and international commerce.
During Amazon’s Smbhav summit for MSMEs, Senior VP for Emerging Markets, Amit Agarwal, highlighted the company’s goal to provide AI access to millions, generate 1 million jobs, and quadruple cumulative e-commerce exports to $80 billion by 2030. Thus far, Amazon has digitized over 12 million small enterprises and facilitated nearly 2.8 million jobs throughout India.
To enhance export capabilities, Amazon has introduced the 'Accelerate Exports' initiative, which intends to link entrepreneurs with manufacturers. Key manufacturing hubs like Tirupur, Kanpur, and Surat will host recruitment drives aimed at helping local producers reach global audiences. Additionally, Amazon plans to provide AI training for 4 million government school students, ensuring future generations are equipped for emerging technological trends.
India is quickly becoming a focal point for AI investments, with major tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon intensifying their commitment to cloud and AI technologies. Experts believe that these investments will significantly accelerate digital transformation, boost exports, and create millions of jobs, thereby reinforcing India’s status as a global tech powerhouse.
