Amazon has initiated its largest-ever layoff, cutting over 14,000 positions, with engineers facing the brunt of the downsizing. This reduction spans multiple sectors, including cloud computing, devices, and grocery sales, reflecting a substantial shift in the company’s operational strategy.
State records from New York, California, New Jersey, and Washington reveal that nearly 40% of the 4,700 jobs lost in these areas were engineering roles, particularly impacting mid-level software engineers (SDE II). The layoffs also included product and program managers, showcasing a widespread restructuring.
CEO Andy Jassy outlined a vision for a more streamlined corporate approach. By minimizing organizational layers, he encourages teams to “do more with less”, aiming to enhance both decision-making and efficiency.
These changes come as Amazon shifts its focus towards an AI-centric future, reallocating resources to develop technology such as its new coding assistant, Kiro, designed to optimize workforce productivity. Despite the significant impact on employees, Amazon clarifies that technology alone is not the cause of these job losses.
The layoffs extend to several of Amazon's experimental projects. The company has scaled back its ambitious video game division, pausing large-scale game developments and impacting roles within its San Diego and Irvine studios, which saw notable reductions among designers and producers.
Teams linked to Amazon’s visual search capabilities also felt the sting of layoffs, with substantial reductions in Palo Alto affecting engineers and applied scientists. Additionally, over 140 positions within Amazon’s lucrative online advertising sector were eliminated in New York, representing about 20% of the office's workforce.
These extensive job cuts underscore a wider trend in the tech industry, witnessing firms reduce staff levels despite robust earnings. For Amazon, the clear objective is to streamline operations, diminish bureaucratic barriers, and ensure strong competitive capabilities in the fast-evolving AI sector.
