NEW YORK – Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is setting its sights on a significant milestone. CEO Lisa Su announced during the company's analyst day that AMD's data center chip market could soar to $1 trillion by 2030, primarily driven by advancements in artificial intelligence.
The company's offerings include central processing units (CPUs), networking components, and tailored AI processors. Su highlighted that the surge in AI presents a unique chance for AMD to broaden its presence in data centers, which have emerged as a cornerstone of contemporary computing.
Despite AMD's gradual progress in CPUs against rival Intel, the company confronts tough competition from Nvidia in the AI infrastructure arena, a sector where Nvidia has long held the upper hand with its high-performance data center chips. Nevertheless, AMD is forging ahead. The firm is gearing up to unveil its next-gen MI400 AI chips in 2026, catering to both scientific research and generative AI applications. In conjunction with these chips, AMD is also rolling out an entire server rack, mirroring Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72 offering.
Moreover, AMD is proactively buying AI-centric companies, including server manufacturer ZT Systems and various software startups like MK1. These initiatives are designed to acquire both innovative technology and the talent necessary for bolstering AMD’s AI prowess. “We’re developing the tools and software that enable efficient AI implementation,” stated Chief Strategy Officer Mat Hein.
Recent partnerships have further reinforced AMD’s standing in the market. A multiyear agreement with OpenAI was signed in October, with anticipated revenue exceeding $100 billion over four years. OpenAI will also have the option to purchase up to a 10% stake in AMD, deepening the collaboration.
The influence of AI is being mirrored in AMD’s financial predictions, with the company forecasting fourth-quarter revenues that surpass Wall Street's expectations due to heightened interest in AI chips. Although there has been a slight decline in AMD’s stock, executives are optimistic about the growth potential in the data center segment.
As AI revolutionizes various sectors and spurs significant demand for cloud computing, AMD is making a bold bet that its synthesis of CPUs, AI processors, server infrastructure, and strategic mergers will establish it as a key player in the anticipated trillion-dollar data center market.
