World No. 3 badminton athlete Anders Antonsen has announced his withdrawal from the ongoing India Open Super 750 tournament in Delhi, attributing his absence to the worsening air quality in the city.
The Danish competitor, a four-time World Championships medallist, stated that the high levels of pollution in the national capital rendered it unsafe for him to participate. His withdrawal has incurred a fine from the Badminton World Federation (BWF), which adheres to strict participation guidelines for elite players.
According to BWF regulations, athletes categorized as “Top Committed Players”—this includes the top 15 singles and top 10 doubles teams—are obliged to compete in World Tour 750 and 1000 events, as well as the concluding World Tour Finals. Exemptions apply only in cases of injury or official medical clearance. Players who miss tournaments without valid reasons face fines that exceed standard withdrawal charges.
Antonsen conveyed through social media that this marks the third consecutive year he has opted out of the India Open due to pollution issues. He raised concerns about the suitability of the conditions for hosting significant international tournaments and expressed hope for improvements before Delhi gets ready for the World Championships later this year. He also disclosed that the BWF imposed a USD 5,000 fine for his tournament absence.
While participation is mandatory for elite athletes, BWF protocols permit exemptions for those attending promotional events on-site. World champion and current World No. 1 Shi Yuqi also withdrew from the India Open but made a brief visit to Delhi for promotional activities.
The tournament has faced scrutiny over playing conditions. Danish player Mia Blichfeldt recently criticized the venue, calling the environment unhealthy. She highlighted poor cleanliness and mentioned that birds flying inside the stadium disrupted training and matches.
In recent days, Delhi’s air quality has worsened, with various areas reporting Air Quality Index values above 300, indicating severe conditions. This has sparked intensified discussions on athlete safety and the feasibility of hosting international sports events in such environments.
