Apple Inc. is on the cusp of regaining its title as the world's foremost smartphone manufacturer by 2025, fueled by an exceptional reception of its newly launched iPhone 17 series alongside a significant global upgrade trend.
This shift signals a pivotal change in the smartphone sector, where Samsung has dominated for over a decade. As per Counterpoint Research, Apple's fresh lineup is not only reigniting demand in established markets but also propelling growth in emerging regions.
The iPhone 17 series, comprising four models, has garnered substantial traffic at Apple Stores, particularly with the ultra-slim iPhone Air attracting considerable attention. Reports indicate long queues in the US and China, aiding Apple in achieving double-digit sales growth year-over-year in these essential markets.
Additionally, Apple is reaping the benefits of improved trade conditions between the US and China and a decreasing dollar, which have bolstered sales in various developing countries. Analysts note that many consumers who purchased smartphones during the pandemic are now looking to replace their devices, further fueling Apple's ascent.
Industry projections estimate a 10% increase in iPhone shipments for 2025, compared to a 4.6% rise for Samsung. If trends hold, Apple is anticipated to secure 19.4% of the global smartphone market—its highest share in years—and reclaim the leading position for the first time since 2011.
Experts also underscore the growing significance of the secondhand iPhone market, with approximately 358 million pre-owned devices sold between 2023 and mid-2025, leading to a substantial user base ripe for upgrades in the near future.
Looking ahead, Apple plans to expand its offerings, with a foldable iPhone and a budget iPhone 17e expected in 2026, followed by a major redesign in 2027. Industry analysts predict that these innovations may help Apple maintain its momentum, even as competition heats up globally.
