Archer Partners with Saudi PIF for eVTOL Trial Flights

Archer Partners with Saudi PIF for eVTOL Trial Flights

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Archer Aviation has unveiled a major partnership with Saudi Arabia's The Helicopter Company (THC) and Red Sea Global, both affiliated with the kingdom's Public Investment Fund (PIF), to explore the introduction of its Midnight air taxis in Saudi Arabia.

This collaboration aims to create a structured "sandbox"—a designated area for conducting genuine test flights of Archer’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The goal is multifaceted: to assess the operational performance of the Midnight, its integration with current infrastructure, alignment with regulations, and public acceptance within Saudi Arabia.

Key Significance:

  • Red Sea Global, known for its luxurious tourism projects like the Red Sea resorts, will spearhead the testing initiative.

  • This initiative signifies Saudi Arabia's growing ambition in regenerative tourism, aiming to replace traditional fossil-fuel aircraft with zero-emission eVTOLs, thus aligning with environmental and modern travel objectives.

  • For Archer, this partnership opens doors for expansion beyond its primary US market, as Saudi Arabia's extensive PIF-supported initiatives provide a unique testing ground.

Next Steps:

  • Test flights of the Midnight aircraft will be conducted under regulatory supervision within this sandbox.

  • Depending on the outcomes—from safety metrics to public feedback—there may be plans for broader deployment, especially connecting airports with resorts and urban areas.

  • While Archer has yet to reveal financial details or the aircraft count, initial deployments are expected to be limited.

Wider Context:
This initiative encompasses more than just airborne taxis—it’s part of Saudi Arabia’s endeavor to adopt next-gen transport under its Vision 2030. The kingdom identifies advanced air mobility as a key element to transform tourism, curtail emissions, and provide high-speed connectivity.

For Archer, this agreement enhances its footprint internationally. The firm has also established partnerships in Asia, and testing in Saudi Arabia allows access to a market rich in capital and progressive outlooks.
