Argentina will head into their upcoming friendly against Angola without three key players due to incomplete health requirements concerning the yellow fever vaccination. The country’s Football Association (AFA) announced on Monday that the Atletico Madrid trio Julian Alvarez, Nahuel Molina, and Giuliano Simeone are unable to join the team for the encounter set for this Friday in Luanda.
According to an official comment from the AFA, the players did not finish the vaccination process needed for entry into Angola in a timely manner. “The players did not complete in time the necessary health procedures related to the yellow fever vaccine, which is required for entry into Angola,” the statement reported. This measure aligns with international travel health regulations, given the presence of yellow fever in several regions across Africa and South America.
Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes that poses serious health risks to non-vaccinated individuals. Various African nations, including Angola, mandate travelers to present vaccination proof to avert outbreaks. The AFA’s announcement illustrates the importance of adhering to global health responsibilities, even in high-stakes sports environments. Reports indicate the players were unable to secure vaccination in time, resulting in their travel restrictions.
The absence of Alvarez, Molina, and Simeone poses challenges for Argentina’s team roster planning. All three players have shown impressive performances with Atletico Madrid this current season. Alvarez, a member of the 2022 World Cup-winning Argentina team, has emerged as a significant player under Diego Simeone’s direction. The lack of Molina affects the right defense, while the omission of Simeone means losing a valuable offensive asset.
Despite these absences, Argentina still has representation from Atletico Madrid with Thiago Almada and Nicolas Gonzalez, who managed to meet the vaccination requirements and are cleared to travel. Coach Lionel Scaloni has expressed confidence in the remaining squad, focusing on maintaining their rhythm and fitness as they look forward to the upcoming World Cup.
This friendly in Luanda will be Argentina’s first-ever senior match in Angola. It forms part of a global initiative by the AFA to foster better international football ties and connect with fans worldwide. For the reigning champions, it also offers a chance to assess new players and explore tactical variations for upcoming engagements.
Argentina was also scheduled to play another friendly in India during this international period; however, that game has been postponed due to failure in securing the needed FIFA approvals in time. The anticipated matchup in Kolkata was impacted by logistical issues and administrative delays, leading to its cancellation. The AFA hopes to arrange the fixture at a later date once all necessary permissions have been obtained.
With Argentina already guaranteed a spot for the 2026 World Cup — which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada — this international window is being leveraged for team cohesion and trial. Coach Scaloni and his team are utilizing these friendlies to evaluate new talent, fine-tune strategies, and maintain squad harmony. Even in the absence of several senior figures, the aim remains to uphold consistency and high performance standards.
The AFA has reiterated that the health of its players and adherence to international medical protocols are of paramount importance. Globally, football organizations are mandated to comply with vaccination and travel regulations to ensure the well-being of athletes and host countries alike. This situation highlights that elite athletes aren't exempt from universal health laws and must follow the same guidelines as any other traveler.
While the friendly against Angola will proceed without three prominent players, this serves as a crucial reminder about the necessity of timely health preparation in international sporting events. This episode could prompt the AFA and its medical team to reassess future travel arrangements to circumvent similar complications. Nonetheless, the world champions remain focused and determined to deliver a powerful performance as they continue their pursuit of defending their title in the forthcoming World Cup.
